What I’d love to talk about (the sweet spot)
I’d love to share stories about the flourishing of earth and humanity. Stories of how humans look after earth and each other.
What I am going to talk about (polarisation)
Sadly, it seems that people are more concerned about looking after “their own”, than “earth and each other”.
“Riots, protests and mass movements are rarely the result of a single event. Instead, a long series of microaggressions and daily aggravations slowly multiply until one event tips the scales and outrage spreads like wildfire.”James Clear, “Atomic Habits”, p.19, writing about negative compounding of habits
Microaggressions and daily aggravations slowly multiplying, leading to the storming of the Capitol.

Congressional Democrats are furious about the Capitol riot and are determined to hold the President accountable.
Between the impeachment movement and the social media giants’ silencing of Trump, the President and his advisers believe his supporters are galvanised. The Sydney Morning Herald, “Trump plans defiant final week in last-ditch attempt to save legacy
Whilst most people were using the same social media, at least there was visibility about what different people are thinking about. As it has been reported, the “Capitol siege was planned online. Trump supporters [are] now planning the next one” (The Age).
The scale of social media is what makes it so difficult to manage. It is no longer a space for debate between individuals, but an arena for tribal warfare.
Donald Trump did not just embrace the social media model of noise, outrage and over-sharing to build his network of … followers, he helped build the insight that when it’s a pure race for scale, objective facts no longer matter. In fact [,] anger-fuelled feels work so much better].The Age, “In pulling the pin on Donald Trump, Twitter is conceding a long-contested point”
Whilst it is possible – in a conversation or debate – to respond to the individual one is conversing with, that is no longer possible at scale. Communication gets minimised to slogans, hashtags and name-calling. There is no room for grey, it is all black OR white.
